A Thousand Ears
(for Mila, who shares poems in cyberspace)

I hear here
I hear we hear here

Your words pulse out, frenetic messages,
newsflashes from your mind

If you did not write
We would have the silence

Of waiting to console us
Distant, cool, patient

The telegraphed poetry
upon finally arriving

globally positions
the terrain of your heart.

(4 November 2001)

written in response to Mila Aguilar's poem, 83Eighty-three
