Out of Place
by Cynthia T. Buiza

Where I live
It is not even winter but something else
ghostly and colder than
a pale hand exposed.

Where I am
it is getting dark
with the patient accumulation of
blood in bathtubs and deaths delayed.

Yesterday I tried to leave.

I sat on a bench and planned my exit
routes I have not taken before
hoping to arrive where I am always wrong
but certainly proved.

What I am
is always restored to this place
still and steady as a corpse
looking out the window to a world
that does not look back.
