Anu Kapipahavas Da Nu Adipasayaw

Anu kapipahavas da nu adipasayaw
du deyedted nu vahay, gumayam gumamitay,
ya dauyen mu sira nu tatauy a digiaw
ta manumanuk siray nu apu ta si Diyos.
(Vuhawan du valugan, vuhawan du kadpihan,)
di cha ava dalaktakan nu minayvahevaheng
a minaypakayapu du yawran na di Vachi.

When the Adipasayaw Birds Pass
by Florentino H. Hornedo

When the adipasayaw birds pass
under the eaves of the house, gumayam gumamitay,
serve them wine in a glass cup
because they are birds of our Lord God.
(Gold of the East, gold of the West,)
it is not that you are not being offered blood of a piglet
it is not that you are not being sprinkled with wine
darkly rich with age
which can come from the rich field of Vachi.

From Laji: Anu Maddaw Ka Mu Lipus: an Ivatan Folk Lyric Tradition by Dr. Florentino H. Hornedo, published by the University of Santo Tomas Publishing House in 1997. Translated into English and reprinted with permission from Dr. Florentino Hornedo.
