in Kinaray-a

Senyang

ni Mila G. Lachica

Ang bayabas
namit gid kadtun
kon bagnas
pero si Senyang
medyo lampas run
sa habal;

gani kang nakabaton tana
ka sulat halin
sa penpal na nga Kano
nga nagapanghagad
mapakasal,
tuman ang ana'ng kakunyag;
wara na masabat ang pamangkot
ni tatay na: may aboy-aboy man bala
sa America? Dayon man sugpon
si Nanay na: ang patadyong
sarang masulud sa malita
ugaring may balayan ayhan rugto
nga sarang masab-itan?

Ang bayabas
kon tuman ka luto
kulapnit lang ang nagasapak;

kag si Senyang kadya
pirmi lang masaku
sa paghabyog
kang ana'ng hinablus
sa aboy-aboy
nga nagakabit
sa balayan
ni Manang na.

* In the island of Panay, Hiligaynon may be known as the official language or the lingua franca since it is spoken by the Ilonggos in Iloilo City but as one leaves the city going to the province of Antique, the tongue shifts to Kinaray-a . Believed to be as ancient as the legend of the ten datus, Kinaray-a traces its roots to Datu Sumakwel who first settled in this part of the island. Today, Kinaray-a still lives on in the heart, in the tongue as well as on paper.
