Living High
by Baboo Mondonedo

Burnt meat offerings in cold mountains
for ancestors gone and nature spirits,
for the living, for the gods,
to remember, to honor and pay tribute.

Burnt meat offerings in cold mountains
for people who touch the sky,
their world the peaks and valleys,
akin to other forms of life.

Burnt meat offerings in cold mountains,
where water is life, as it is sacred,
where the earth is an oikos, a home
that cannot be owned, outliving humanity.

Burnt meat offerings in cold mountains
where people are poor but free,
life more difficult, but whole,
words spoken, the deed done.

Burnt meat offerings in cold mountains
where they speak without saying,
making their presence felt in many ways,
through dreams from the world beyond.

Burnt meat offerings in cold mountains
where everyone belongs to a tribe,
is counted, protected and defended,
whose flesh and blood come back to earth.

Burnt meat offerings in cold mountains
is my sense of security.
I've been enveloped by a cloud,
encircled by a people.
