Prison Poems from FIRE TREE

Where I am the sun also gets in
by Isagani R. Serrano

1.
Deadend from end to end
Walls, bars, wires meshed one on each
One helluva hole for breaking a soul.

2.
Sunrise in prison—
Sunlight touching window bars
Like a warm kiss.

3.
As the sun peeps over
The wall's skyline, a sip of coffee
And a cancer stick to greet the day.

4.
Leafing through a book
In a still-life afternoon
One can shut the door
And forget.

5.
Sundown in prison
Is never seeing the sun
Kiss the horizon.

6.
A moonlit evening
Is freedom unbound. The eyes
Catch the farthest stars.

7.
Through a half open gate
Small hands wave and disappear
To close a Sunday affair.

8.
Them, petty tyrants
They brandish their locks and keys
Like they own our lives.

9.
Going round and round
Christmases, birthdays peg the count
Time just flies.

10.
A sweet scented air
Breezes through old and new cracks
On walls about to fall.
