Babaylan Chant
by Hope Casareno

The sacred history whispers
itself back into existence,
its essence unchanging and ever changing,
on the lips of every sentient being
a secret no more
ba · bay · lan
like a chant that builds in power
through its own momentum
gathering us up
in its estimable wake
ba · bay · lan
completing the circle, the dawn
utters its promise to break
today and every day.
